Cav Claims Green in Spain

Isle of Man cycling star Mark Cavendish has won his first Grand Tour jersey.

The Manx Missile is the proud owner of the Tour of Spain sprinters green jersey at the end of 21 gruelling stages.

Sports Editor Tim Glover reports:-

Cav was beaten at the finish of the final stage in Madrid city centre by his American rival Tyler Farrar.

However, he crossed the line second to manage his advantage - he finished seven points ahead of Farrar in the end.

Cavendish is only the second British rider to win one of the major prizes at one of the three Grand Tours - the other two being the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia.

Malcolm Elliot won the points jersey at the Tour of Spain in 1989.

The Manx Missile will now turn his attention to the World Road Race Championship in Melbourne on Sunday 3rd October before joining the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games team in India to attempt to win a second gold medal - this time on the roads of Delhi a week later.
