Cubbon's clinch hat-trick success

Onchan husband and wife team Mark and Eunice Cubbon scored a dominant victory in Saturday’s Riverside Furniture Jurby Stages Rally.

The pair set the fastest time on ten of the 12 airfield stages in their Mitsubishi Evo 7, finishing with a 28 second victory margin, despite easing off late in the day.

The result means the pair extend their lead at the top of the Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship, having won each of the first three rounds; the first time such a hat-trick has been achieved in recent times.

Reigning champions Richard Curphey and Andrew Holmes finished as runners-up on their first run in a recently acquired Vauxhall Astra, fastest on each of the last two tests and joint fastest on another two.

Kex Walker and Danni Matthews (BMW 325) scooped a maiden podium finish in third overall, just nine seconds clear of Noel Kelly and Andy Sweetman (Evo 6), after Kelly was hit with a 20-second penalty for hitting course markers.

However, Kelly did have the consolation of claiming the turbo class victory.

Other winners were Kevin Vondy/Will Rand (Vauxhall Corsa) in the 1300cc class, James Pettigrew/Emma Kennaugh (Vauxhall Corsa) took the 1600cc honours, Nigel Cannell/Nick Kaighin (Vauxhall Astra) the front-wheel drive, two litre and, in the rear-wheel drive equivalent, Jasper Kirkpatrick/Marty Quine (Vauxhall Astra) came out on top.
