Cycling: Top-three finish for Cavendish on Tour Colombia first stage

38-year-old calls it 'best debut race for a few years'

Mark Cavendish has secured a podium finish on his first competitive outing of 2024.

The Manx Missile took third place on yesterday's first stage of the Tour Colombia - an event which is making a return this year after a four-year hiatus.

Elsewhere, Movistar Team's Fernando Gaviria won the stage whilst Italian rider Davide Persico took second for Bingoal WB.

Speaking to the Astana Qazaqstan team media after the race, 38-year-old Cavendish says the result 'could have been worse but it could have been better', but adds 'this is my best debut race for a few years and the strength of our team was evident.'

The second phase of the tour begins later with a 169km route from Paipa to Santa Rose de Viterbo and is due to get underway at around 3pm UK time.
