Fifth place for Cavendish

Cyclist Mark Cavendish finished fifth in the sprints competition of the Tour of California.

The Manx sprinter won the bunch sprint and came sixth in the final stage on Sunday.

The High Road rider was furious after being denied a win by organisers on Saturday.

He was disqualified from the sprint and given a 20 second penalty after commissaires ruled he had sheltered behind a support vehicle for too long, after being involved in a crash.

After the race he questioned why commissaires hadn't issued the same penalty when American rider Levi Leipheimer crashed in Santa Rosa last year, allowing him to keep the race lead.

It was also Revolution 20 on Saturday evening at the Manchester Velodrome, featuring numerous Manx cyclists.

Chris Whorrall finished second overall in the DHL Future Stars series, after 8th, 3rd and 2nd placed finishes.

He also formed part of a team that finished a close second in the Geoff Thomas Foundation Italian Pursuit, which included Victoria Pendleton and Arnaud Tournant.
