Good haul of medals for Manx on day one

It was a success first day of action for the Isle of Man at the NatWest Island Games in the Isle of Wight yesterday (Sunday).

The Manx team won several medals, including three golds in the men's team cycling criterium, the women's half marathon team event and in the Olympic skeet shooting.

The first Manxman on the podium was Kevin Loundes, who finished second in the men's half Marathon to claim silver. The Isle of Man's Ed Gumbley finished sixth and Martin Malone was ninth and the Manx also earned a silver medal in the men's team event.

In the women's half marathon, the duo of Hannah Howard and Gail Griffiths went one better and claimed the gold medal ahead of Jersey and the host nation.

In cycling, there was a silver for Laura Wasley in the women's individual town centre criterium, and she teamed up with Alison Clague and Mary Mason for another silver in the team event.

There was a bronze in the clay shooting, and in football the Isle of Man men's team began their quest for glory with a 4-2 victory over Gotland, while the women thrashed games debutants Gibraltar 9-0 last night.
