Jiu-Jitsu: Gracie Barra scoop medals in Paris

Five-strong squad shine at prestigious European Gi Championships

The Isle of Man has a new European Champion and three more medals in jiu-jitsu after Manx competitors shone at a prestigious European event this week.

A five-strong squad from Gracie Barra Isle of Man took part in the IBJJF European Gi Championships in Paris throughout this week.

Newcomer, Bayram Chausev, was crowned European Champion and gold medallist in the middleweight division after racking up five consecutive wins in the category.

Meanwhile, 2022 British Nogi Champion, Hayley Curtis, is taking home a bronze medal in her class after a submission win in the quarter-final to claim third place.

Elsewhere, Lukasz Borciuch also claimed a bronze medal in the Super Heavyweight division.

After beating the number one seed in his second match, he then had to withdraw from the semi-final due to injury but did enough to take third place.

Head Coach, Conrad Roberts, says they're 'so happy' with the results and performances overall.

He adds they're planning to attend a tournament each month in 2023 and are looking to build a team for the Nogi Europeans and World Championships towards the end of the year.

This was the first time the Isle of Man has ever had a team competing in the European Gi Championships.
