League goes down to the wire

Ramsey Rebels and Rushen set up a final match decider in the Freeway Express League after both recorded wins in their penultimate games yesterday.

Rushen put themselves back in contention with a 12-1 victory over Colby Cosmos.

David Cottier and Peter Blower drew the opening singles game 7-7 before Seamus Whelan (14-4), Peter Coward (12-7) and Stephen Gale (9-7) all recorded wins in theirs.

The final game of fours was a tight affair throughout but Rushen took the final end to win 7-5 and the match 12-1.

Ramsey Rebels beat current leaders Castletown Southsiders 7-6, even though they trailed 5-3 after the singles.

Emma Smith and Jill Quayle took a point apiece after a 7-7 draw in their singles game.

Sam Peel (10-8) and Jayne Kinley (14-4) took the points for the Southsiders with John Jauncey getting two for the Rebels with a 7-6 win in his game.

Ramsey Rebels took the all-important fours 9-5 but lost out on the bonus point to end the match 7-6 winners.

The result leaves Castletown Southsiders top by four points from Ramsey Rebels and Rushen,

However the Southsiders have played all their matches so can't win the title due to Ramsey Rebels and Rushen facing each other in that final match of the season.

The standings, with one week to go are:

1. Castletown Southsiders....................28pts
2. Ramsey Rebels................................24
3. Rushen............................................24
4. Ronaldsway Rockets.......................15
5. Colby Cosmos.................................13

Next week sees the Swift Motors Pairs. Any pairing who haven't yet entered should contact Stephen Gale on 462424.
