Michael stage incredible fightback

Westerners triumph 10-9 on spot kicks

Ten-man Michael United staged the comeback of the season in the GH Corlett Woods Cup on Saturday.

The westerners trailed Governor’s Athletic 4-1 at half-time in their preliminary round tie.

However, despite being reduced to 10 men early in the second half, Michael fought back to earn a 5-5 draw.

There were no further goals in extra-time, although Governor’s missed a penalty, and in a dramatic shoot-out, Michael won 10-9 on spot kicks.

Douglas and District are also through after two goals in five minutes midway through the first half secured a 2-0 home victory over Gymns.

Ben Hall opened the scoring direct from a corner before the prolific Daniel Clague-Stewart added a second.

Two goals in the final seven minutes ensured Braddan overcame a potential banana skin in the Friends Provident International FA Cup.

Extra-time looked a possibility after Jay Chatwood equalised Joe Andrews’ header early in the second half.

But late goals from Lee Currer and Andy Glover ensured second division Foxdale would not progress past the preliminary round.
