PSJ ease into Tinker Cup semi-finals

Three matches played on a wet weekend

On a thoroughly wet and windy weekend, it was an achievement to get three of the four new format Tinker Cup games played.

Valkyres and the Under-17 Isle of Man Development team played first with an 11am start at Mullen-e-Cloie and Valkyres rattled up 79 in their 10 overs, although Ben Bloch was able to take two wickets for 16.

Charlie Beard’s belligerent 51 not out kept the opposition close with a total of 74.  Valkyres batted carefully in the second spell at first but both Muhammad Salman and Arun Mahalingam broke free scoring 63 and 42 not out respectively.

Arun’s three offside sixes in the last over helped to give Valkyres a good cushion of runs to defend.

The Development team looked to be done for when Charlie Beard was bowled for a duck early on, but Sam Barnett and Josh Clough batted skilfully and aggressively, which left Valkyres watching the scoreboard with some anxiety.

However, Josh Clough fell for 18 to the bowling of Muhammad Salman and then Sam Barnett played back to the first ball from Andy Coulson and was out for 42.

Despite Carl Hartmann’s defiant 33, the Under-17s challenge faded and Valkyres won by 47 runs.

Ramsey had a really bad day at the office when they played Peel and St Johns.

They batted first and scored 57 from their first 10 overs with Will Ward batting through the innings.

PSJ took their first turn at the crease and amassed a large total of 141 runs in their 10 overs.

Ollie Webster bludgeoned his first fifty of the season, when he scored 79 before he was bowled by Will Ward.

He was ably assisted by Chris Hawke until he was forced to retire when his score was 28.

Ramsey returned but they could only get 43 at their second opportunity before they were all out.

Colin Gilbert was particularly destructive in his bowling with figures of 4 for 5 runs from 3 overs. PSJ won the match by 41 runs.

Crosby and Finch Hill started their game later in the day and Finch Hill got to 78 runs with George Burrows scoring 35.

Crosby made a tidy 109 for 6 in their first innings, with Jamie Brown top-scoring on 53.

His innings included six fours and one six. Eddie Beard managed to take two wickets for nine runs for Finch Hill.

Finch Hill came back for their second attempt and put together a score of 100.

Eddie Beard scored 42 but Finch Hill were hampered by the loss of 3 quick wickets when the score was in the thirties.

The rain intensified and interrupted Crosby as they chased a combined total of 179.

An adjusted total of 31 was agreed, which Crosby easily achieved in six overs.

Peel and St Johns, Valkyres and Crosby will take their place in the semi finals along with the winners of the Castletown/ Cronkbourne match.
