Surtees passes away at 83

Tributes to 6-time TT winner

Motorsport has lost one of its true greats.

John Surtess, the only man to have won the grand prix world championship on both two wheels and four, has passed away.

He won four 500cc motorcycle titles between 1956 and 1960 before switching to Formula One and winning the 1964 series with Ferrari.

Surtees is a six-time TT winner.

He competed in 15 races around the Mountain Course and finished in all except the 1956 Junior.

Surtees was a popular and well-loved figure and was due to speak at the Isle of Man Sporting and Dining Club at the beginning of February.

Unfortunately he didn't attend due to ill health and Johnny Herbert stepped in instead.

A family statement says Surtees died at St. George's Hospital in London this afternoon after being treated for an existing respiratory condition
