Former Island player overcomes Swiss veteran in Bordeaux

Isle of Man pro tennis player Billy Harris beaten former Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka during his latest match on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Facing each other in the Round-of-32 at the BNP Paribas Primrose Bordeaux yesterday (13 May), Harris overcame the Swiss wildcard entry 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The 30-year-old former Castletown and Albany competitor will now face third-seed Talon Griekspoor in the Round-of-16.

It's also Harris' first win on an ATP event in just over a month with his previous victory before this week coming in a qualifying semi-final for the BMW Open in Germany on 12 April.

Meanwhile, 40-year-old Wawrinka has 16 career singles titles to his name including three Grand Slams - the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open (Roland Garros) and 2016 US Open.

He is also a previous Davis Cup winner with his country in 2014 and was an Olympic gold medallist in the men's doubles alongside Rodger Federer in Beijing in 2008.
