Former Island player wins in straight sets in Roehampton
Former Island tennis competitor, Billy Harris has progressed to the third round of the 2026 Wimbledon qualifiers.
The 31-year-old has beaten Hungarian competitor, Zsombor Piros in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) during the second phase of the Gentleman's Singles qualifying phase.
It's a second victory in as many days for Harris who dispatched Italian player, Stefano Napolitano in the previous stage.
As a result, Harris will now face China's Zhou Yi in the next phase tomorrow (25 June) with the start time and court still to be confirmed.
After conceding the opening game to his opponent, Harris responded with three games in a row to take control of set one.
Despite a more back-and-forth exchange of games following this, it was Harris who would claim the first set.
Into set two, and play was suspended for a short time due to a fault with the electrical line system after Piros had surged into a two-game lead.
Harris fought back when play resumed to take control and move onto a 4-2 advantage and, despite a late charge from Piros, the former Albany and Castletown competitor went on to secure a second and decisive set.
Currently ranked 140th in the ATP World Rankings, Harris is aiming to secure a place in the upcoming Wimbledon main draw which he has featured in over the last two years.
