Union Mills and Braddan claim cup scalps

Two games and two big shocks in the Cu-Plas FA Cup first round.

The only matches to survive the weather both caused upsets with victories for Second Division clubs Union Mills and Braddan over St John’s and Castletown respectively.

Two goals from Matthew Cain and one from Alexander Suckling fired the Merry Millers to a surprise 3-1 win.

Steven Glover was on target for St John’s, who had Andy Glover dismissed, but there was no stopping Union Mills as they sealed a quarter-final place.

There was another surprise as Braddan stunned Castletown 5-2 after extra-time.

Ally Delaney fired the mid-table Second Division side in front before Geoff Murphy doubled the advantage.

Karl Clarke’s header reduced the arrears before substitute Nathan Cooil brought Town level to force extra-time.

In the additional 30 minutes, the match turned on the sending-off of Clare for handball and Danny O’Hare converted the resulting penalty to put Braddan back in front.

Goals Johnny Padi and Tony McKay rounded off a memorable win with late goals to secure a quarter-final spot.

The scalps were both made more memorable as both Union Mills and Braddan gave up home advantage due to the condition of their respective pitches.
