A Mixed Bag

Today, Catherine Nicholl chats to Lord Michael Dobbs on his fundraising walk around the Island, we have music from Han FX and we look back at Islexpo with a Pecha Kucha 20x20 from Artist Vici Blackburn.

Do contact the show if you’d like to share any creative happenings with us, you can email me at Spotlight@manxradio.com or you can message the Manx Radio Facebook page.

Lord Michael Dobbs, Author of House of Cards is our first guest on the show today. Catherine Nicholl caught up with him on his rather pacey walk around the whole Raad Ny Foillan to raise funds for Isle of Man Hospice

Now we’re heading to Bushy’s TT Village to find out what’s been happening since we last spoke to local Hip Hop Artist Han FX, we were lucky to catch him just before he went on stage!

It’s TT week so there’s plenty happening around the Island but here are a few things not to miss:

You have a rare opportunity to see Pigs on the Wing this Senior race day at the Hooded Ram Festival tent.

Jo Harman is on at the Peel Centenary Centre on Saturday the 16th, if you’re a soul or blues fan you’ve got to get down there to hear her voice - the gig starts at 8 and you can find tickets on Facebook or at centenarycentre.com

At the Villa Marina Arcade it’s Brass Band Season again! Their next concert is on Tuesday the 19th at 8 o’clock.

And it’s not for a few weeks yet but the Mananan Festival is making quite a splash this year with Sheku Kanneh-Mason, best known as the cellist who played recently at the royal wedding headlining the fortnight-long festival. Tickets to see Sheku and his siblings have sadly sold out but you can still see acts such as Kabantu, Michael Collins and Michael McHale and harpists Ieuan Jones and David Lloyd Williams. We’re hoping to bring you more on these acts in the coming weeks so watch this space but in the meantime, you can grab your tickets at through the Erin Arts Centre website.

We’re taking a look back now at the fabulous event that was Islexpo, one of my highlights was seeing creatives from around the Island giving us a snapshot of their practice at the Pecha Kucha 20 x 20. Islexpo’s theme this year was Locate, so makers, movers and shakers gathered to share how the Isle of Man has shaped their creative journeys. Vici Blackburn was one such artist who showed us her work through the Pecha Kucha model of 20 slides each last 20 seconds.

I’ll be back with Spotlight next Wednesday at half-past-five but until then have a happy and safe TT Week!
