FOLKESTRA!

On the programme this week, I take part in Joe Broughton’s Folkestra workshop, brought to the Island by Culture Vannin last month, and Usha Kishore shares one of her beautiful new poems with us.

If you’d like to come on the show and share something creative with us, drop me a line at Spotlight@manxradio.com and don’t forget you can listen again to the show as a podcast and on demand on our website where you’ll also find the Spotlight blog full of links and further information about the guests and events featured this week.

We start today’s programme at the Folkestra workshop brought to the Island for the first time by Culture Vannin. If you, like me, have no idea what a Folkestra is, luckily we have Chloe Woolley of Culture Vannin, Percussionist Tom Chapman and workshop leader Joe Broughton here to explain what it’s all about!

If you liked what you heard, you can find the Urban Folk Quartet and the Birmingham Conservatoire Folk Ensemble on Facebook and Youtube, make sure you don't miss this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rI-1ssLzdo

And looking ahead, March is full great events around the Island including the next Isle of Man Drawing Club meet-up at Noa Bakehouse on Thursday the 15th. You don’t need to be an esteemed artist to attend, the idea is to get together, have some drinks, make some friends and enjoy giving your life-drawing skills a whirl in a no-pressure environment - you’re probably better than you think!

Also on the calendar, is the second Creative Industries Public Meeting of the year on March the 22nd from 6pm at Noa Bakehouse. It’s always worth going along to these events as each meeting has a different focus and is a great opportunity for creatives to network and shares ideas.

And, this month’s deadline for Arts Council funding is looming! If you’re hoping to apply for a bursary, grant, or underwriting make sure your applications are submitted by March the 15th in order to be considered at the next Arts Council Board Meeting. More information can be found at iomarts.com - good luck!

Writer Usha Kishore joins us on the programme to give us a preview of her poem In-Between Space, ahead of our conversation with her next week here on Spotlight.

Join us again next Wednesday at half past five for your weekly dose of creativity on the airwaves - keep in touch through Spotlight@manxradio.com and find this week's show in podcast form on the Manx Radio Website.
