On Air The Afternoon Show Chris Pearson | 3:00pm - 5:30pm

Women Today Hop Tu Naa Special!

As it's the weekend before Hop Tu Naa - the oldest continuous Manx tradition - Beth and Christy had a special 'Conister Shocks!' show this afternoon, celebrating all thing spooky.

A lot of the information we have in today’s programme is courtesy of Culture Vannin who have a fabulous page dedicated to the ‘festival’ on their website, with videos showing you how to carve moots, to people sharing their memories and family traditions, to the various versions of the Jinny the Witch song - some of which we heard today, as recited by Sue Woolley, John Dog Callister and children from the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh.

We also had some goosebump-inducing ghost stories sent in by listeners, and suggested spooky songs to add to the atmosphere.

Don't forget, the Island’s biggest ever turnip-carving competition has been announced and there’s still plenty of opportunity to get involved, with the chance of winning a Railway Season Pass for two, limited edition hop tu naa T-shirts, 50 stamps, a selection of books & CDs plus further runner up prizes.

To enter the competition, simply post a picture of your carved turnip online with the hashtag #htnturnipcomp or e-mail the pictures to resources@culturevannin.im The images will be shared online as a celebration of Hop tu Naa. Closing date for the competition will be 5th of November 2018 and winners will be contacted after 10th of November 2018.

If you missed any part of today's programme you can listen again at this link for the next 7 days.
