A study of how the Island's past and present was viewed by outside observers from c.1648 to c.1776. Man's entanglements in the British Civil Wars, empire, and other conflicts provoked British historians and administrators to take an interest in the Island. In a crucial period for the formation of Great Britain, Man's distinct society and jurisdiction attracted admiration and ire. The Island's past was narrated in myriad forms - variously emphasising the roles of the English crown, Lords of Man, and Manx people - and with analogues across the British Isles.
