Annual inflation rate sticks at 1%

Steady rise across categories

Inflation continues to rise in the Island, with the annual rate in December increasing by 1%.

Last month's rise mirrors November's, based on the Consumer Prices Index (CPI), and continues the upward trend since September 2016.

Official government figures show over the 12 month period, prices rose in most categories, with housing, transport and utility costs having the greatest impact.

The Cabinet Office says there was less discounting and lower levels of sales among retailers last month, compared to the previous December.

In the year from December 2015, petrol and diesel prices rose by 10% while there was an average 21% hike in the cost of heating oil.

Postage and telephone costs rose by more than 6%.

Categories where prices fell include clothing and footwear and food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Potatoes were the exception - consumers paid 15% more for the food staple in December 2016 than a year ago.
