Scheme's win-win deal for firms and students

Island businesses willing to host an undergraduate on a work placement this summer are encouraged to sign-up for STEP 2017.

The programme offers local students the opportunity to work supervised within an organisation on a dedicated project.

Previous STEP placements have seen students work on projects from marketing and creative to manufacturing and quality assurance, in private sector firms, government departments, local authorities and with voluntary groups and charities.

STEP 2017 is sponsored by Standard Bank, whose CEO Chris Till has described their involvement as 'hugely beneficial'.

Ian Felmeri, Engineering Manager at DLP Ltd which hosted a student placement in 2016, said: ‘The STEP scheme provides great benefits for both parties, the student gains useful experience in a working environment and the employer gets valuable work done on a project of their choosing with defined deliverables.’

STEP is administered by the Department of Economic Development, which pays students £210 per week.

The programme has seen 260 projects completed during the 10 years it has been run in the Island.

Potential host businesses need to apply by 30 June and for further information contact Ian Moncrief-Scortt on 664883 or e mail ims@manx.net

Students must apply by 7 April.
