2014 warmest year on record for Island

2014 has been officially declared the warmest year on record in the Isle of Man.

Latest figures from the Met Office put the mean temperature for the year at 11.1 degrees Celsius, just above the previous record of 11 C set seven years ago.,

The 12 month period was memorable for the floods in January and the hot, dry summer - and the Met Office summary shows 2014 was indeed a year of extremes.

All months in 2014 had above-average temperatures, apart from August.

The hot spell in late June through July together with the mild autumn and winter all contributed to the record-breaker.

But although warm it was also wet!

2014 started with serious flooding caused by a series of unusually deep depressions coinciding with high tides

Total rainfall for the year measured 1015 mm compared to the long term mean of 864 mm, ranking it the 7th wettest year on record,

The hottest day of 2014 was 25 July when the mercury reached a sweltering 26.6 degrees Celsius while the strongest wind blew  on 12 February when a gust of 78 miles per hour was recorded at Ronaldsway.
