Abortion reforms reach first political stage

Campaigners urge MHKs to think twice

Proposed abortion reforms in the Isle of Man are set to move a step closer this morning (Tuesday).

Members of the House of Keys will consider new measures, which include allowing women a termination up to 14 weeks into their pregnancy and up to 24 weeks if there are serious health concerns or social grounds why a baby shouldn’t be born.

Ramsey MHK Dr Alex Allinson has spent 12 months working on the plans which are due to receive their first reading in Keys.

He believes the majority of politicians support what he’s trying to achieve:

Meanwhile, campaigners feel the Island will have the most liberal abortion laws in the world if the proposals are supported.

Dave Brennan from Abort 67 says Dr Allinson's bill offers no protection for an unborn child.

He is urging MHKs to form a committee to ensure there is a proper critique:
