Alleged Africa House arsonist appears in court

17-year-old charged with arson after August blaze

A teenager from Ramsey has appeared in court charged with starting a fire at Africa House this summer.

Peter Evan Corteen, of Lezayre Road, is yet to enter a plea to the offence of arson which was allegedly committed on 11 August.

The derelict property, on Woodbourne Road in Douglas, was cordoned off at around 6pm that day after smoke and flames were seen coming from the roof.

At Douglas Courthouse today (21 December) the prosecutor told the court it’s alleged the 17-year-old was within the grounds of the property with friends before returning, alone, to start the blaze.

Requesting an adjournment, until the New Year, the teen’s advocate told the court: "It seems that Africa House is something of a mecca for the bored youth who go there."

Bail was granted with conditions including that the teen does not enter the grounds around Africa House or the property itself; he’ll next appear in court on 11 January.
