Police treating Africa House fire as suspicious

Scene remains cordoned off as investigations continue

Police have confirmed a fire at a derelict property in Douglas is being treated as suspicious.

The emergency services were called to Africa House on Woodbourne Road at around 6pm yesterday.

With smoke and flames issuing from the roof, firefighters used an aerial platform to extinguish the fire from above, as windows and doors at the property were boarded up, hindering firefighting operations.

Crews spent around three hours at the scene tackling the blaze and ensuring hot spots were dampened.

The Isle of Man Constabulary says a number of enquiries are ongoing, but the incident is being treated as suspicious, with the scene remaining cordoned off and under police control.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area between 4.30pm and 6.15pm who may have information that could help police with their enquiries.

Those who can help can contact Police Headquarters on 631212.

The property was previously owned by the late businessman Trevor Baines, but has been unoccupied for a number of years.
