Appropriate adult recognised as 'unsung hero'

A volunteer who has been recognised for her dedication and commitment to her role as an appropriate adult on the Isle of Man says she’s ‘humbled’.

Geraldine Pishvaie collected the Dr Christian Unsung Hero Trophy at the Chief Constable’s Annual Awards this week (21 September).

The honour is awarded to someone who routinely carries out difficult, demanding work to a high standard and without any fuss.

She’s part of the Isle of Man Constabulary’s Appropriate Adult Scheme which supports juvenile and vulnerable detainees during challenging moments of their lives.

The Isle of Man Constabulary said: "Over recent years, the number of available volunteers on the Appropriate Adult Scheme has reduced significantly.

"Despite this Geraldine has remained steadfast in her commitment, making herself available both day and night to ensure that vulnerable individuals receive the support and assistance they are entitled to.

"Her willingness to respond whenever required has made her an invaluable and trusted partner to the Isle of Man Constabulary.

"Geraldine's contribution extends far beyond simply being available.

"Through her calm, compassionate and professional approach, she helps detainees understand complex procedures, safeguards their rights and ensures that legal obligations within the custody environment are met.

"Her presence provides reassurance to vulnerable individuals while enabling custody processes to proceed fairly and effectively.

"Without Geraldine's exceptional commitment the Custody Suite would face significant challenges in fulfilling an important statutory requirement.

"Her dedication, reliability and selfless service, given entirely alongside her own personal and professional commitments, exemplify an “unsung hero”.
