Approval sought for new Childcare Credit Scheme

Nursery boss praises government's efforts to increase provision

Tynwald will be asked to approve a new Childcare Credit Scheme for the Isle of Man this month.

It will extend pre-school credit to children aged three and four years of age.

Government will pay for more sessions at day care centres, and with childminders, as a way of developing the sector and providing more accessibility for parents.

It was something announced in this year's Budget.

In the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak’s rolled out a new programme of free childcare places in England.

Eligible parents and carers of two-year-olds in England are now entitled to 15 hours each week.

This will be extended to children aged nine months in September.

However Labour has been critical of the scheme saying there aren’t enough nurseries and childminders to deliver the policy.

Siobhan Fletcher has this report:

If the Childcare Credit Scheme gets Tynwald approval it will be introduced in September.
