Ballakermeen bags £5,000 grant

Bag levy helps school 'go greener'

An Island high school has been awarded £5,000 to spruce up its outdoor environment.

Pupils and staff at Ballakermeen high school are hoping although money doesn't grow on trees, trees will soon sprout on its money!

The cash has been donated to the Douglas school by Tesco, from its Bags of Help charity project.

The store levies 5p on plastic carrier bags and uses the income to support local community projects.

Ballakermeen's environmental project aims to make the school environment greener, through planting trees and shrubs, creating social areas for students.

Launched in 2015, Bags of Help has raised more than £27 million in the UK and has distributed funds to more than 3,500 projects nationwide.
