Karen Norton recognised for her services to English learning
The Island's latest British Empire Medal (BEM) recipient says she was 'completely overwhelmed' when she heard the news.
Karen Norton was recognised in the King's Birthday Honours for her services to English learning.
She founded Café Lingo - an initiative offering free English lessons and practical support to immigrants from around the world.
Karen says she hopes the awards sends out a message of acceptance:
Also honoured this year were sports journalist John Watterson and Peel Cathedral Dean, the Very Reverend Nigel Godfrey, who both were made MBEs, while former Peel resident Dr Steven Quilliam also received a BEM for services to the community.
