Big heathland fire in the west of Island

Blaze sparks emergency turnout

It took more than two hours to bring a large heathland fire under control in Dalby last night (Saturday).

The blaze led to emergency crews attending a heathland on Dalby Mountain between Dalby and the turn off to Eary Cushlin shortly after 9pm.

With the fire spreading quickly, crews from Peel, Castletown, Kirk Michael, Port Erin, Laxey and Douglas attended.

Officers from the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture also provided information and guidance on the ecologically sensitive area involved.

Crews worked hard to prevent the fire spreading towards the nearby Creg Na Crock plantation using multiple jets, hosereels and beaters.

The road between the Round Table and Niarbyl was closed while the incident was dealt with.

The cause of the fire, which was extinguished by 11.45pm, is unknown.
