Birchalls charge to TT sidecar record

Brothers dominate first sidecar race

The first sidecar race of this year's TT, delayed from Saturday, saw the Birchalls take up the early challenge, leading into Glen Helen from John Holden and Lee Cain with Dave Molyneux and Dan Sayle third.

From then on, it was a touch of Birchall reality for the rest of the field.

Brothers Ben and Tom in their Honda, dominated from the first lap and looked to be totally in charge as the race developed, with a gap of 12 seconds through the Grandstand after lap one and 16 seconds as they approached the end of the second lap.

They blitzed the sidecar lap record in lap two, their own, taking it to 117.119 miles an hour. They were the fastest ever sidecar through the speed trap at 148.5 mph.

So the Birchalls take a comfortable fifth TT win, 25 seconds ahead of John Holden and Lee Cain, and third-placed Dave Molyneux and Dan Sayle, with Sayle suffering from apparent broken ribs.
