Brace yourselves in Laxey - heavy rainfall coming

The aftermath of flooding in October last year

Amber warning from Met Office tomorrow morning

The Met Office is warning there could be localised flooding overnight, as heavy rain is forecast, with standing water and difficult driving conditions likely.

An amber warning will be in force from 3am until midday tomorrow, with up to 70mm of rain expected over higher ground.

River valleys along the east and northeast coasts are likely to see the heaviest rainfall:

Neil Young, from the Met Office, says exact amounts of rainfall are hard to predict, as they can differ hugely in a small area:

You can hear more from that interview with Manx Radio's John Moss here:

John also went for a look around Glen Road today:

Garff MHK Martyn Perkins says Laxey residents brace themselves whenever such forecasts are issued:

You can find out more about government's Emergency Planning Unit here, and sign up for the notification system Mr Perkins referenced here.

The unit says: "if required, sandbags are available on Glen Road, Laxey and from the Department of Infrastructure on 850000 or Civil Defence on 331673."

Mr Perkins was reflecting on the most recent flooding in the village, which saw more than 40mm of rainfall in under two hours earlier this month.

You can watch that interview in full below, with Manx Radio's Dollin Mercer:

It formed part of an episode of Perspective this weekend, which documented a recent history of flooding in Laxey.

Also on that programme, the vice-chair of Garff commissioners said flooding problems in the Laxey valley should’ve been addressed ‘years ago’.

Nigel Dobson wants to see work accelerated before more harm is done:
