Census 2021: population grows by 0.9%

Increase in the number of 'economically active' residents

The Isle of Man's population has grown by 0.9% in the past five years, according to the first results of the 2021 census.

The study, which took place on 30 May, shows 84,069 people now call the Island home.

Meanwhile, the average age of residents increased from 42.5 to 44.4.

On Census Night 2011 the resident population stood at 84,497, and 83,314 in 2016.

Employment

The number of people in employment has increased by 1,930 (4.6%) while the economically active population - that's anyone 16 and older and either seeking work or waiting to start work - increased from 42,777 in 2016 to 44,875 in 2021 - an increase of 4.9%.

Place of birth

This first look at the Census also shows us where residents were born - compared with 2016, the percentage of the population born in the Isle of Man fell slightly from 49.8% to 49.6%.

By comparison, the percentage born in the United Kingdom fell by 1.7%.

Meanwhile, the number of those whose nationality corresponds to a country in the European Union has risen from 4,184 to 4,728.

Housing

Outside of population, the report looks at the number of vacant properties on the Island - of which there are were a recorded 5,695 residential properties vacant at the end of May last year.

This figure includes flats, houses, and cottages used as holiday
accommodation, but excludes hotels and other commercial properties.

The first look at the Census also shows a breakdown of ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation and the number of people living with long-term disability or illness.

A second report will be released in May with more details on residents’ occupations and information on the types of households on the Island.
