Chief Minister meets UK Prime Minister at British-Irish Council Summit in Scotland

42 summits have been held in its 25 year history

The Chief Minister is attending the British-Irish Council (BIC) Summit in Edinburgh today, representing the Isle of Man alongside the UK prime minister and other leaders and ministers from Ireland and the Crown Dependencies.

Key discussions at the summit, hosted by the Scottish Government, include the transition to renewable energy and other shared concerns.

Speaking ahead of the event, Alfred Cannan highlighted the importance of the Council as a platform for collaboration, describing it as “uniquely valuable for the Island.”

He believes the opportunity to meet one-to-one with leaders from across the British Isles to raise the Isle of Man’s profile and share its views on current issues.

Marking its 25th anniversary, the BIC was established under the 1998 Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.

Its members include the UK and Irish governments, devolved administrations, and Crown Dependencies.

The meeting takes place as Middle MHK Stu Peters prepares to call on Tynwald to adopt a more 'pragmatic' approach to climate change, prioritising the needs of Isle of Man residents over environmental concerns.
