Committal challenge in £750k fraud case

Two men appear at Douglas Courthouse

Committal proceedings in the case against two men accused of committing fraud, in excess of £750,000 have been delayed.

Glen Cooper, of Helm Road in Windemere, and David Hewitt, of Clover Avenue in Peel, appeared at Douglas Courthouse.

Mr Hewitt, who is 51, has been charged with five offences of committing fraud by false representation and three of theft; the charges date between November 2018 and September 2019.

Mr Cooper, who is 53, has been charged with 16 offences of committing fraud by false representation, four of theft and one of forging documents with the intent to deceive.

The charges date between March 2017 and September 2019.

Magistrates were told committal, where the case is elevated to the Court of General Gaol Delivery, was being challenged; a hearing date to discuss that challenge has been set for 4 May.

Mr Hewitt was bailed until that date and Mr Cooper remains in custody at the Isle of Man Prison.

Update: At Douglas Courthouse on 10 November the prosecutor offered no evidence on the charges faced by Mr Hewitt and they were dismissed.

The allocated trial date – of 4 December – was vacated.

The court heard Mr Cooper will potentially be sentenced on 14 December.
