Committee hears evidence from First Deemster

Investigation into legal services on Island

The Constitutional and Legal Affairs and Justice Committee is hearing evidence from several witnesses today (Mon 17th)

The committee - a standing committee of Tynwald - is currently investigating legal services on the Island.

The inquiry is an amalgam of the previously announced inquiry into the regulation of legal services in the Isle of Man, with reference to the role of the Law Society and, in particular, the Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal and the more recently announced inquiry into the process of becoming a Manx advocate.

The inquiry will include consideration of the proposed Public Defender’s Unit.

Today evidence is being heard from First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls Andrew Corlett, Deemster Alastair Montgomerie, Deputy High Bailiff Jane Hughes, and Chief Registrar Stuart Quayle.

The hearing is taking place in public in the Legislative Council Chamber, Legislative Buildings, Bucks Road, Douglas.

Members of the public are welcome to attend; proceedings will also be streamed live via the Tynwald audio webcasting service.

The Committee was established by Tynwald in October 2017. The Members elected to the Committee are Mrs Jane Poole-Wilson MLC (Chair), Mr Lawrie Hooper MHK, and Mr Chris Robertshaw MHK.
