Competing priorities blamed for delay to recruiting DHA CEO

Permanent chief executive sought

Competing priorities – including the Covid-19 pandemic – have been blamed for the delay in recruiting a permanent chief executive for the Department of Home Affairs.

The recruitment process for the post is now underway after confirmation the department won't be restructured

The Department of Home Affairs says it wants to find someone who can 'drive forward change' and ensure delivery of the targets and outcomes set out in the 'Our Island Plan'.

That person will be responsible for modernising and supporting critical services on the Island and will have to put the 'delivery of community safety at the heart of their decisions'.

The chief executive position – which is the most senior civil servant within the department - is currently held by Dan Davies who took it up as an interim role in 2018.

At the time government said he would undertake it for 12 months as part of a 'development opportunity' but just over three years later he's still there.

Justice and Home Affairs Minister Jane Poole-Wilson has admitted that the 'interim' period has, perhaps, gone on longer than expected:

The position of chief executive within Home Affairs has a starting salary of £89,000 a year – the closing date for applications is 13 March.
