DASH announces e-gaming firms backing

The Drug Advice Service and Helpline (DASH) is to get backing from two of the Island's big e-gaming firms - PokerStars and Microgaming.

The announcement was made as the charity released its 2012/13 annual report at a gathering at The Embassy at the British pub in Douglas.

Director of Services at DASH Shelly Stanley says the funding will give the charity a chance to build stability.

It had faced closure earlier this year, after government withdrew its support.

DASH's report shows a total of 372 new contacts to the confidential service, an increase of 29% to the adult service and a 46% rise in those contacting the young person’s service in 2012/13.

The most problematic drugs for both adults and young people were cannabis, alcohol and cocaine.

There was also  a rise in the use of new psychoactive substances previously referred to as legal highs as well as prescription-only medication.
