Fire crews tackle blaze at Scarlet lime kilns

Firefighters contain early morning blaze at disused industrial site.

Firefighters from Castletown and Malew, and Douglas stations were called to a blaze at the disused lime kilns in Scarlet early this morning.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews were dispatched at approximately 5.45am following reports of a fire at the site.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a large quantity of rubbish alight within one of the decommissioned kilns, generating significant volumes of toxic smoke.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were deployed to prevent the spread of the fire.

A water relay system was established using supplies from a nearby disused quarry to maintain a continuous flow of water.

Crews remained on scene for around three hours to fully extinguish the fire and ensure there was no risk of reignition.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.
