Fizzy drink caused damage to bust of Captain Quilliam

Likeness of sailor due to return to public display in the New Year

A fizzy drink is thought to have been the cause of some of the damage to the bust of one of the Island's most famous sailors.

Copper corrosion has resulted in the likeness of Captain John Quilliam being sent to the repair shop.

It's hoped the item will be back on display in the coming weeks.

Enterprise Minister Lawrie Hooper confirmed in a recent House of Keys sitting that Captain Quilliam's stay in the Castle Rushen Speaker's Garden has resulted in green copper corrosion.

The inscription was left almost impossible to read, and a further mark was thought to have been caused by a carbonated soft drink.

An Island craftsman was ready to do the work after October's Trafalgar Day, with funding coming from the Friends of Manx National Heritage.

The bust is expected to go back on display by the harbour in Castletown in the New Year.
