Gorse fire tackled near Port St Mary

Police investigating cause of 'multiple scenes of fire' on cliffside

Fire crews tackled a cliffside gorse fire near Port St Mary yesterday (Sunday, 24 March).

It became alight shortly after 4pm, with residents in the surrounding area asked to keep doors and windows closed due to the level of smoke.

Officers say they were met with 'multiple scenes of fire with gorse well alight on the cliff' with smoke that could be seen from 'some distance away'.

Although being particularly difficult to reach due to its location, the crew extinguished the fire and were off the scene in three hours.

The area of gorse was 'well drenched' to prevent any more fires reigniting.

Police say they are working with the fire service to identify the cause of Sunday's blaze.

Anyone with information or who photographed any individuals in the area at the time is asked to contact police headquarters.
