Gov't urged to 'show leadership' three weeks before Omicron changes

EAG called for face coverings on public transport at the start of November

Government was advised to 'show leadership' and require the wearing of face coverings in public three weeks before introducing its Omicron measures.

Guidance from the Emergency Advisory Group called for masks to be warn in public sector buildings and on public transport last month, as well as an increased focus on the booster rollout.

Minutes from a meeting on 4 November, only released in the last 24 hours, show that the group felt government's communication to keep booster & third jab take up was at a high level was somewhat lacking.

It followed reports, at the time, of around 800 people missing their vaccine appointments.

Record-breaking numbers were reached at the first walk-in clinic for over 18s yesterday, with a total of 2,441 jabs administered.

The EAG also believes the benefits of vaccination for children who have had Covid-19 needs to be emphasised.

In addition, the group pushed government to be clearer about the benefits of CO2 monitors and noted that, with winter approaching, mask wearing and improved ventilation will reduce the spread of Covid-19.

Three weeks before mask wearing came into force on public transport and in public health settings, the EAG said CoMin should 'show leadership' in this area and require the use of masks in public sector buildings, including on public transport.'
