Growing population the least supported aim of government's economic strategy

Less than 40% voice strong support for 100,000 population by 2037

Plans to grow the Island's population to 100,000 have polarised Manx residents responding to a consultation on the proposals.

A summary of the just under 500 responses to government's economic strategy has been published ahead of a revised plan being submitted to Tynwald this month.

While the consultation document says there was broad support for the strategy, less than 40% of respondents felt increasing the population to 100,000 by 2037 was either very or extremely important - the lowest of the four main aims.

Meanwhile, 28% of those taking part in the consultation felt it was not important at all.

Insufficient housing, the additional cost of living on the Island and issues with the Island's infrastructure were all flagged as concerns.

Those answering the questionnaire also called for improvements to healthcare and education, particularly higher education options on the Island.

The consultation found the public feels the size of government and bureaucracy are a barrier to success, and that there needs to be a focus on retaining existing residents, alongside attracting new ones.

As a result of the consultation, changes have been made to the original document published earlier this year.

It now includes a section entitled 'infrastructure and services' focussed on ensuring the Island has the facilities to support an increased population, while the energy strategy has been strengthened.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan will bring the revised strategy document to Tynwald next week.
