Tramway opened on 7 August 1876

One of the Island's most notable tourist trademarks is celebrating a birthday today.

The Douglas Bay Horse Tramway opened for business on Monday, 7 August 1876 - 142 years ago today.

They are the surviving legacy of the English civil engineer Thomas Lightfoot.

Since then, the horses have trundled up and down the mile-and-a-half tramway every year - stopping only briefly at the height of World War II.
