Increasing numbers of wild rabbits with myxomatosis

ManxSPCA issues warning about incurable disease

The ManxSPCA says it's seen an increase in the number of wild rabbits on the Island suffering from myxomatosis.

The disease, which was deliberately introduced into the rabbit population in the 1950s as a way of controlling numbers, is said to be 'particularly nasty', causing their eyes and nose to swell.

The charity says unfortunately, there's no cure for it and can take several weeks for the rabbit to die once it's contracted the disease.

Anyone who finds a bunny suffering from myxomatosis is asked to take it to a vet to be euthanised.
