Independent review of health department given green light

Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan

Review will be 'expensive' admits Treasury Minister

A fundamental, independent review of the Island’s health and social care department is to be commissioned.

The year-long study will be carried out by independent experts.

Tynwald has this afternoon (Tuesday) backed a move by Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan to progress a scheme to identify how a modern, affordable, fit for purpose healthcare system can be delivered.

The court also voted to support a £9.5 million overspend by health chiefs during the current financial year.

Mr Cannan says he expects the review to be carried out will be expensive.

Members of the court also unanimously accepted the findings of a Public Accounts Committee report into fiscal strain in the health service, along with a series of recommendations to tackle future deficit.
