Island artist sketches out plans for culture quarter

The Island's capital could soon be boasting - and marketing - a thriving arts 'quarter'.

It's based around the Gaiety Theatre, Villa Arcade and gardens, Sayle Gallery and the area leading to the Manx Museum.

Local illustrator Alice Quayle who came up with the concept, has created an illustrated map of the area and has also set up a Facebook page, Douglas Arts and Culture Quarter. A promotional film may also be made.

Alice says it struck her that the area, along with the murals at St Thomas' church, make a compact, walkable culture district which could be promoted as a whole.

She hopes the concept can develop after the Year of Culture celebrations and usefully tie-in with Douglas town centre regeneration plans.

The idea has been supported by the Arts Council which says it hopes the scheme will alert both visitors and local residents to the wealth of cultural venues and attractions Douglas has to offer.

Leaflets will be available at the Sayle Gallery and other cultural venues around the area, as well as from the Welcome Centre.
