Andreas Meats switches to UK pork loins as Lee Mayers Butchers reports delays but hopes for a return to stable Manx supplies
Two Island butchers are raising concerns about the availability and suitability of Manx pork, prompting changes to some of their products.
Andreas Meats Co says it has switched to UK pork loins for its bacon and hams due to what it describes as a shortage of Manx pork and supplies from Isle of Man Meats that no longer meet its specification.
The business says the smaller loins currently available are unsuitable for producing its usual standard of bacon.
However, it maintains that all other meats it stocks remain Manx.
Meanwhile, Lee Mayers Butchers has also highlighted supply difficulties, saying it is still stocking Manx meat but has experienced delays.
The business says IOM Meats has been in touch and is looking into the issues.
It hopes to return to stable supplies, using UK imports only during busy periods to maintain its product range.
In response to Manx Radio's request for comment the Isle of Man Meat Company said: "The Isle of Man Meat Company remains dedicated to supporting the Island’s agricultural sector and ensuring long-term food security for our community.
"As part of this commitment, Isle of Man Meats processes cattle, lambs, and pigs supplied by local farmers.
"The finest cuts of beef, lamb, and pork are distributed to butchers and supermarkets across the Island, ensuring that Manx consumers have access to high-quality, locally produced meat.
"We are pleased to report that livestock numbers are now increasing and are expected to return to normal levels over the coming weeks, continuing through the Christmas period and beyond.
"Michael Barker, General Manager of Isle of Man Meats said: “Open communication with our stakeholders remains central to how we operate, and we are committed to strengthening this further as we move forward.
"We have been in direct contact with Mr Mayers to discuss how to alleviate any further issues and we are working together to achieve this.”
