Isle of Man to offer 'direct assistance' to Ukrainian refugees

Island's role 'needs to be examined' says Cannan

The Isle of Man is looking to offer ‘direct assistance’ to people fleeing the conflict in Ukraine - which could include accepting refugees.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan says the Council of Ministers has determined that the Island should 'play its part' in providing humanitarian support following the Russian invasion.

This morning government issued a statement saying the Isle of Man 'should be prepared' to offer further assistance to people fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.

'There is, I think without doubt now, going to be a major humanitarian crisis on our doorstep and it's appropriate that the Isle of Man considers how it can play its part.'

Alfred Cannan spoke live with Sian Cowper on Manx Radio's Breakfast programme about what that support could look like:

The Island is also donating half a million pounds to help charities operating in Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

More than one million people have fled the country since the Russian invasion just over a week ago - the United Nations Refugee Agency expects that number to rise to four million as the conflict continues.

Government says it's in discussion with local stakeholders and international organisations, as well as the UK Government, on how best the Isle of Man can play an active role in providing support.

Cabinet Office Minister Kate Lord-Brennan will Chair a Ukraine Relief Committee to co-ordinate communications and assess 'appropriate options' for CoMin's consideration.

A dedicated email address ukraineguidance@gov.im has been set up, to help those seeking visas and further advice.
