Knottfield: Authorities must 'listen and believe' victims of child abuse

Committee's recommendations accepted by Tynwald

It's warned that child abuse continues to happen on the Island today, and authorities must listen to, and believe, victims.

That's from a member of the Social Affairs and Policy Review Committee, after Tynwald accepted a number of its recommendations yesterday to better safeguard children.

The report came in light of failings at the Knottfield Children's Home in the 1970s and 80s.

A number of young people suffered abuse at the facility, with one perpetrator, Senior House Parent Joseph Marshall, last year jailed for six years for historical offences.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan apologised on behalf of the Council of Ministers last month.

In yesterday's sitting of the Island's parliament, however, Tynwald agreed to formally apologise on behalf of members past and present for the authorities of the time failing to detect and prevent the abuse.

Douglas Central MHK Ann Corlett sits on the committee which put forward the report and recommendations.

'I hope in my own heart that we never have any child abuse, but we have to be sensible about this.'
