Laxey Bridge finally open

But works set to continue

Laxey Bridge is now open to traffic.

The new structure, at the end of Glen Road in the lower village, has taken nine months to build.

It's been passable to vehicles since 4pm - but pedestrians must continue to use a nearby temporary footbridge as works continue.

Last December's severe flooding caused the original bridge, which had stood firm for hundreds of years, to dramatically collapse as a school bus was driving across it.

In the months that followed, there's been controversy among local residents and business owners over the time taken to carry out the works, and the lengthy public consultation which was launched to settle on its design.

The bridge is set to be fully completed within the coming months.
