It's a little-known fact that when worn and disused Manx coins are removed from ciruclation, they are not melted down for scrap value - but buried.
Investment and Banking Manager at the Treasury Colin Campbell has lifted the lid on what happens to 'spent' hard cash - notes and coins.
While notes are finely shredded by a milling machine, coins which have been replaced or are too damaged to circulate, are buried out-of-sight and out-of-mind, in major public building projects.
Speaking on Sunday Opinion, Mr Cambell said from time to time, coins have to be disposed of - and deep burial is the preferred method:
